How to get Started

Steps to building a community garden with others

  1. Organize a meeting
  2. Plan a meeting where anyone who is likely to be interested in starting a community garden is invited. During this meeting, topics like: what kind of garden is wanted/needed, what should be planted, and who is it for can be discussed during this time.

  3. Form planning committee
  4. This committee will consist of people that will be planning the actual creation of the garden. Committee members will tackle tasks like funding, partnerships, building, children interaction, etc.

  5. Identify your resources
  6. Within your community, figure out what resources you can use that will help with the creation of your garden. Reach out to people that are educated in landscaping, planning, and gardening.

  7. Look for a sponsorship
  8. While a lot of gardens are supported through payments or donations from the members, it doesn’t hurt to try to reach out to a sponsor to help fund the project. Look for places likes schools, churches, small businesses, etc to help sponsor your garden.

  9. Chooisng a location
  10. A very important step, choosing the location of your garden. Keep in mind the amount of sunlight it receives, access to water, good soil, etc.

  11. Preparation of the site
  12. Before the planting of the garden begins, make sure that the land is prepared for planting. This might include cleaning the area, designing the site, and plot arrangement.

  13. Organize the garden
  14. This step includes assigning plots, making space for storage, and planning out pathways in between plots.

  15. Teaching children
  16. Including children in the community garden is a great way to teach them about the process of gardening and the different items that can be planted and how they should be maintained.

  17. Determine rules
  18. Creating a list of ground rules for the garden is a great way of making sure members know what is expected of them.

  19. Keep in touch
  20. Gardens are meant to create and strengthen a community. Keeping in touch with members is a great way keep that unity.
