Native plant garden

The Native Plant Garden contains some common native plants found throughout San Diego. The early native people, the Kumeyaay Indians, conservatively and religiously utilized these plants on a daily basis.

Prayers and sage smoke were offered before hunting and harvesting. The Kumeyaay relied upon native plants for their subsistence, as they provided them with not only food, but also clothing, medicine, and shelter.

Today, native plants are still relied upon for survival by our local wildfire and provide essential habitat.
